Retreat Overview

Compassion grows from a capacity to recognize and empathize with the pain of others. It does not grow from ideals of perfection but rather from an understanding and acceptance of our human fallibility. It grows from an attitude that is no longer critical and judgmental. But to genuinely develop compassion for others we must first begin to clear some of own emotional wounding and come to a place of deeper acceptance and compassion towards ourselves.

When we heal this wounding we can begin to open our heart to others and our life becomes more alive and meaningful, our relationships become more rich and rewarding. We may have some appreciation for the Bodhisattva's dedication to the welfare of others, but to truly surrender to this way of being we must first heal our own psychological wounding.

During this retreat we will explore some of the practices for healing our own wounding and opening to others which form the foundation upon which the awakening heart of Bodhicitta emerges.  These practices have been passed on to us by the Tibetans and when approached in a more psychological manner can have an extremely beneficial effect on both our sense of self as well as the way we respond to others. Central to them is the practice of TongLen or Taking and giving.

This retreat will be in silence but there will be opportunity to look at and discuss some of the personal issues that arise in the process of practice. It will be appropriate for both relative beginners and those who have some experience of practice.

Teacher Bio

rob_preece_smallRob Preece has been a practicing Tibetan Buddhist for the past 40 years. He was a founding member of Manjushri Institute in the UK and lived there until 1980 when he went into retreat above Daramsala on the guidance of Lama Yeshe and Zopa Rinpoche. He remained there for the next five years primarily in retreat but with the opportunity to study with a number of eminent lamas including Song Rinpoche, Lati Rinpoche, Gomo Rinpoche and H.H. Dalai Lama.

Returning to the west in 1985 he began to train as a Psychotherapist at the Centre for Transpersonal Psychology in London, a Jungian based psychotherapy. Since that time he has had a busy Psychotherapy practice and has taught many workshops on comparative Jungian and Buddhist Psychology. More recently his work has shifted from psychotherapy to spiritual mentoring.

Over the past 25 years Rob has also lead many meditation retreats introducing the practices of the Tantric tradition with a wish to honor Lama Yeshe's profound and creative approach to practice.  Many of these retreats bring together the combination of meditation and movement guided by his wife Anna. In 2005 Rob was initiated as a Granicero or 'weather worker' within the Nahual tradition of Central Mexico something that informs his work with the land and weather within which he lives in the UK. He brings together the Tantric tradition with this shamanic background as a means to help Tantric practice become grounded in relation to the land and the elements of the natural world. Rob is an experienced Thangka painter and keen gardener and is the father of two boys. He is the author of The Psychology of Buddhist Tantra, The wisdom of imperfection, The Courage to Feel and Preparing for Tantra.

Recomended Reading

courage_feel_robpreeceThe Courage to Feel

            ---  by Rob Preece

When circumstances are challenging, how do we react? This book offers methods to help us develop greater inner strength and openness to life by changing the habit of what Rob Preece calls self-preoccupation--the tendency to act from a narrow perspective dominated by insecurity and isolation. When we learn to look outside this mentality and truly cherish others as well as ourselves, we create a happier, relaxed mind and more fulfilling relationships, as well as realizing our life's purpose in a meaningful way.

A long-time Buddhist practitioner and psychotherapist, Preece shares traditional meditations and practices for awakening the mind and heart including tonglen, but he also offers a Jungian perspective on these and his own sense-cultivated during many years' experience--of the ways in which Westerners may need to re-see these practices to benefit most from them.

Preece's insightful fusion of East and West will help readers tap inner resources of compassion and integrity in order to flourish in times of uncertainty and ultimately generate the altruistic aspiration to realize the awakened mind for the benefit of all living beings. Preece offers meditation practices at the end of many chapters to help the reader digest and integrate the book's information.
