About the Camp

As the children of Family Camp grow…. Teen Camp is shaped!

teen-camp

Now in its fourth year, as an evolution of Vajrapani's Family camp, this camp was conceived to
offer an ongoing camp experience for families who have experienced family camp and would
like to continue. This camp will give teens a fun, friendly space to explore deeper issues in life
through lively discussion, fun activities, guided meditations of various types, and time to chill
with new friends.
At the request of our returning campers we have moved the first camp closer to the second camp
for those staying on as helpers with family camp. Please contact Giselle if you are interested in
helping with family camp.
The Teen/Parent camp has two tracks: one for teens and one for parents.
In our teen track, working with leaders who understand how challenging teen life can be, we will
explore how we think, how we act, and how we use our dharma in our daily life. We hope to
help teens tap into their innate intelligence so they can create happier lives now and in the future.
The program is Buddhist-based and the activities will all be teen-friendly and teen-focused.
The parent’s program this year will be facilitated by Sharon Gross and will be more focused
around meditation training with an emphasis on developing our appreciation of the concept of
emptiness and the experience of meditating with that as our object of understanding.
All families with teens 13-18 are invited to inquire. The experience of parents and children
sharing the weekend continues from the family camp tradition. We also welcome applicants of
teens attending on their own.
On request we have lengthened Teen camp to four days. Attendants can arrive and register
between 1-3 PM on Friday and the course will conclude by 2:30pm on Monday.
Fees: Sliding Scale $400–$200 per person

For Teens
Teen camp's holistic approach engages both mind and body. This year the teens will learn how to work with five main emotions that affect our daily life: jealousy, pride (both low self-esteem and arrogance), anger, desire and confusion. Through discussion and guidance, we will learn basic ways to recognize these emotions, understand how the emotions feel in our bodies, and learn practical, hands-on techniques for coping when the emotions feel overwhelming. The teens will also share the ways they already deal with strong emotions using their innate intelligence.

In addition to the main theme, teens will experience a variety of other activities: they will sample different meditation techniques, do art projects, watch stimulating teen-focused documentaries, engage in creative movement, discuss topics like gender, diversity and spirituality, and have plenty of time for interactive games and chillout time. Teens will have the opportunity to develop mindfulness, compassion and empathy, and share with their peers in a safe space. The program is Buddhist-based, however no prior experience with meditation or Buddhism is required.

For Parents

This year the parent track will focus on meditation, both on and off the cushion, in order to become familiar with the basic tools, the importance of taking time each day, and of setting some time aside for oneself each year to focus in retreat.

Miss Representation

This year at Teen Camp we are going to watch the multiple Award Winning Documentary: Miss Representation.

According to the film's website:

Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, Miss Representation (90 min; TV-14 DL) uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.
