Retreat Overview

hhdlprayerOur states of mind, habitual thoughts and emotions play an important role in shaping our experiences of happiness and suffering in everyday life. In reality though, few of us are really doing much to deal directly with our destructive thinking patterns and afflictive emotions. This retreat will look at the approach taken by Tibetan Buddhism to work with these emotions.

Venerable Robina shares:

“According to Buddha, we all possess extraordinary potential to cultivate our minds, our very being. It's not some special gift that only some people have; it's innate within all of us.

But potential for what? Not something holy, like heaven in the sky, or next life, but potential to lessen fear, depression, anxiety, neediness, low self-esteem and to grow love, contentment, compassion, clarity, courage and the other qualities we so badly want.

The key to accomplishing this is to understand the deeply ingrained instinct of attachment. As Lama Yeshe says, “I could tell you about attachment for one whole year,” but we will never begin to understand it until we go deeply into our own minds, unraveling the complexity of the emotions, seeing them clearly and learning how to harness and transform them, thus becoming effortlessly in charge of our own minds and lives.”

Teacher Bio

Robina-CourtinVen. Robina Courtin is well known for her no nonsense teaching style which embodies both great compassion and razor sharp wisdom.  Venerable was ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun at Kopan Monastery in Nepal in 1978.  She has worked full time since then for Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche's Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition, first as editorial director of Wisdom Publications and then as editor of the FPMT magazine, Mandala. She is the founder of Liberation Prison Project, which supports the Buddhist practice and studies of thousands of prisoners in the USA and Australia. Since 1987 she has taught Buddhist courses and retreats at FPMT centers worldwide.

Born in Australia, she studied classical singing in Melbourne until her early twenties. In London she was involved with the radical left and feminism and then, in her quest for a spiritual path, studied martial arts.

An award-winning film, Chasing Buddha, made by her nephew Amiel Courtin-Wilson, documents her life and includes her work at Kentucky State Prison. She is one of the subjects of Vicki Mackenzie's “Why Buddhism?”, and a film by Christine Lundberg, “On the Road Home.”
