Work-Study:
at Vajrapani Institute
"I feel as if I have found a precious little oasis, where I have the opportunity to work, study and practice amidst an enchanting redwood forest. The atmosphere is one of tranquility and serenity, which I find are very good conditions to cultivate a peaceful mind. Serving a Buddhist community feels very rewarding.” – Cristian

Are you interested in living and working in a Dharma community located in the heart of the Redwood Forest?
Work Practice participants spend 25 hours a week caring for Vajrapani Institute. Work-study at Vajrapani is an excellent opportunity for you to help support the Dharma and to ‘dip your toe into the waters’ of Dharma community life. Vajrapani Institute is the perfect place for embarking on or deepening your spiritual practice. This land has received many blessings over the years from visiting Lamas, and this combined with the natural peace of our remote mountain setting makes Vajrapani an excellent base for focusing on your spiritual path.
What do we look for in our interns?
Flexibility, reliability and enthusiasm! Interns are asked to offer service for 25 hours a week. The work may involve anything from chopping vegetables to gardening, cleaning, running errands, washing the dishes or working on the land. When you apply, please make sure to let us know if you have any special skills.
What do interns gain from a stay at Vajrapani Institute?
You will have the chance to participate in community spiritual practices, attend any teachings taking place during your visit and spend time living with a small, friendly group of sincere dharma practitioners.
Our community includes a number of long-term students of Tibetan Buddhism so there are plenty of people around who are happy to help with any dharma/meditation technique questions you might have. We also have a small but well-stocked dharma library and a small selection of dharma DVDs and videos.
When can you come?
As the only accommodation we are currently able to offer our interns is camping, we encourage applications for the Spring and Summer months, some time between early May and late September.
How long can you stay?
This varies widely however we ask candidates to commit to a minimum of two weeks. After completing this initial 2 weeks trial period here, interns wishing to extend their stay are invited to meet with our Assistant Director/Personnel Manager to discuss this possibility. Please note that we cannot guarantee ahead of time that interns will be invited to stay on longer, as suitability is assessed on an individual basis after completion of two week’s service.
What is provided?
You will be offered tasty vegetarian meals and a leafy camping spot to pitch your tent. Please bring your own tent, a towel, flashlight, sleeping bag and all your essential toiletries. If you don’t have a car, do bear in mind that we do NOT have a staff car here and that it’s a half hour drive from here to Boulder Creek, the nearest town.
How to apply:
If you are interested in participating in our internship scheme, please contact Jacob Lindsley at (831) 338-1311 or by email at jacob@vajrapani.org and request an application form.
